LOL @ SXSW 2012: Driving to Austin in Batman shoes (and taking photos, too)

Saturday night at a pre-SXSW bash in Toronto

Austinnnnn, HO!

Oui, C’est Vrai — I’m off to Texas for South By Southwest tomorrow morning. If you, like most of my friends outside the tech world, are like “meh” or “Cowboyssss, cool…“, peep this.

SXSW interactive is considered by many (okay, The Miami Herald) to be the “Superbowl of the Digital World“.

Billed as “an incubator of cutting-edge technologies,” more than 20,000 attendees flock to Texas each year for this massive fest. They come for presentations, networking events, free ribs and, most notably, to preview America’s most promising new digital developments.

2009 saw the launch of Foursquare. 2007 practically launched Twitter. And the music portion of the conference (That I won’t be in town for, wahhh)? It’s even cooler… depending on what you’re into.

If all of THAT means nothing to you, here’s a list of famous people expected to be at the conferences this year. Everybody cares about famous people or something. Don’t even pretend you’re not jazzed about this.

So what am I, one gadget-loving digital journalist from Toronto doing down in Texas this week? Making friends and learning a ton, I hope. If Channing Tatum happens to be one of those friends, COOL.

I’m also part of the Official SXSW Photo Crew, which means that I’ll be hard at work all day erryday shooting the panels, sessions, lounges and events I’m assigned to.

In the evenings, I’ll be hitting comedy shows, concerts, networking events and what I’m told is a pretty insane party scene.

Here’s the kicker though: I’m DRIVING to Austin with Casie and Kate — and we’re going to document the road trip via – what else? – social media.

Once we arrive, Kate will continue to keep a trip diary and syndicate all of our content on the SX3B Tumblog. And there will be tons, beleedat.

I’ll try to tone down the duckface. Promise.

And now, a word about our sponsors…

This trip has been made possible by a number of wicked and generous companies we’ve known and have worked with for ages.

Billabong, Element and West 49 are ensuring that I’ve got the sweetest wardrobe ever this week.

I still can’t get over how cute their stock is. Great price points too. But you shall see more about each individual piece on #SX3B as we wear them.

In the meantime, check West 49′s Girls Spring Lookbook. Be still my wallet…

I couldn’t resist trying on a few things. You know how it is.

Converse has provided shoes for us — so many pairs of shoes! I’ll be taking madddd photos of all these, obviously.

Big ups to Micki for securing the DC x Converse Batman Chuck Taylor All Stars, but the Converse x Marimekko poppy low tops too! I was squealing when I opened the boxes!

And last but not least, Ford has been kind enough to lend us a sick whip for the week.

Behold: the Ford Focus titanium, with snow tires — just in case:

We’re picking our loaner up tomorrow afternoon and off we’ll gallop into the highway… IN THESE!!! #ChuckLove

The shoes, not the boxes.

My goal is to make one video every single day of this trip.

Between the photos, vids, BBQs and decentralized dance parties (!) I don’t think I’ll have time for much blogging, but I’ll be posting here when I can…

Follow my Tweets, the SX3B tumblog and my youtube channel if you’re… well, if you’re my mom or boyfriend and actually care about my every adventure. I miss you guys already :(

Here are a few things I’m looking forward to (many of which overlap and / or conflict with my photography schedule, but whatever. Maybe I’ll get scheduled to cover them?)

Panels:
“But Is It Art?”: The Aesthetics of Social Culture
Open Web, Open News: Reporters & Developers Remix
The Future of the New York Times
Podcasting: Breeding a New Class of Comedy Nerd
Hack [ANYTHING] with Microsoft Kinect
Spacebits: Awesomeness, Balloons, Space and DIY
Technology and Fashion
Next Stage: Cinematic Storytelling and Journalism
The Business of Kevin Smith
Greek to Geek: Classical Rhetoric & the Modern Web
Detroit Future: A Media Based Economy
Snackable Content: Working in a Bite-Sized Future
DotAnything 101: Demystifying New Doman Extensions
What Journalism can learn from Science
A creators guide to transmedia storytelling

And so, so, so many more. My schedule took at least 6 hours to prepare. The options are insane!

Mashable’s got a great list of not-to-be-missed panels here, too.

As for the parties, comedy shows and other things, a lot will depend on what my homies are up to — but here are a few want-to-hits that I’ve pulled:

SXSW Yoga
The SXSW Trade Show
Tumblr’s Robo Party
The GeekyBeach Party
Screenburn Arcade
Meme Meet Up
Get Excited and make things with science
Nuclear Tacos
The Nokia Lab, Evening Event
Nardwuar vs. Epic Meal Time
Stag Comedy
The Better Together Decentralized Dance Party

And then, and then, and then…

I’m off to pack now — there’s a a lot to be done and I’m feeling a bit tired. Something tells me that’s not going to be remedied anytime soon.

Converse S/S 2012 Preview: Do Ya Thang + A Chuck Taylor Manicure

Hey yo, shoefans.

Last night, I saw the future (sort of):

See that? Future. The very near future of footwear departments at select retail stores within Canada, that is… which still counts as the future in my blogpinion. (Hey – if scientists can reccommend that Justin Bieber be sent into space, bloggers can write authoritatively about future. This is fact.)

I actually hit the Converse Spring/Summer 2012 Press Preview Monday night at the Hotel Le germain in Toronto, is what happened, and LOOK! I got my fingernails turned into bebe shoes:

Er… more importantly, I got a chance to see some of the new kicks Converse will be rolling out for Canadians next season. Trust me — it is good.

"Model for me, Seany!"

I was immediately drawn to a table filled with shoes from the much-hypedConverse x Gorillaz Chuck Taylor collection (which launches in Canada this month):

Converse x Gorillaz and Converse x Marimekko

Have you heard that new Gorillaz ft. Andre 3000 and James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem) track yet? I’ve been loving on it for a week and had no idea until just now that it’s actually part of Converse’s huge “3 artists, 1 song” project.

Small freaking culture. Or it is? Smaaaart campaign. I’m impressed by it on so many levels. Those illustrations alone, jeez… Not to mention the video (!):

This is getting a lot of hype right now for all the right reasons. Dope song, wicked animation and, as many have taken note, Andre just slayyyys it with his verse. So fast. (Don’t get excited though, kidlets – this does not signal the return of Outkast, apparently. Whatever.)

Back to the shoes though, because the shoooooes the shoes! Good luck trying to have a meaningful conversation with me in a room like that. My eyes dart back and forth from shoe to shoe, bags to shades, posters to people, people to other people — their clothes and cameras, mostly…

I take a photo of Marcus Troy taking a photo of Jay Strut taking a photo of some Chuck Taylors. Ooooh photo chain. I hope there was a security camera or something on me. Probably not.

Here are some of my favourite pieces from the Converse Spring and Summer 2012 collections:

The Chuck Taylor All Star Dainty is a slightly more feminine version of the classic low-top. Wardrobe staple. I’m loving them in the summer materials – especially “Strawberry Pink”:

The ChuckIT Lady CVO: Lightweight slip-on Chucks with a nautical twist. If I ever make it out to the Yacht club, you’d best believe I’ll be wearing something like this. All the better to speed away from snooty guards when they catch me hopping the Yacht Club’s fence! “Get out of here, you vagrant city rat! Shoo! Well, I never! Myaw!”

The Chuck Taylor All Star Coast: The kicks are collapsible, meaning that they’ll fit into a suitcase just as well as your flip flops, and with a mesh upper they’re nearly as breathable too. Sold.

I’d be remiss not to include the Chuck Taylor All Star in this mix since I’ve owned more pairs of Chucks than any other single shoe style in my entire life (with the exception of those foamy almost-disposable beach flip flops from Old Navy. I go through like, 20 pairs a season legit).

Here are some of SS 2012′s seasonal colours — I’m loving on the purple (Irish Orchid) and the green (Green). And the creamsicle (Nectarine). Frig, I want them all. That dazzling blue, too.

Big ups to the fly lay-days from Wow Wow Nails for turning my fingernails into little kickers! I’ve been showing these off all day.

I’m off to get my hurrs did right now – at the Academy, because I’m too frugal for those fancy schmancy “$150 but you get a free teaaaaaa” salons right now. Saving up for a big, big trip! Gots to be smart.

Fingers crossed I don’t end up looking like this:

Converse x Mario = GOOMBA CHUCKS + Today in Blogworthiness

Don’t even try to act like you wouldn’t spend ¥16,312.11 for these suckers when they drop on Japanese Ebay in a few months.

Seriously, please don’t act that way. It reminds me of the frivolous spender I pretend not to be around people who are supposed to think I have some sort of self control or something. So let’s all for the sake of my conscience agree that these shoes are worth every penny we will all eventually spend on them:

I’m not really feeling the whole Nostalgiaporn thing anymore lately, but these are clever as heck. I mean, dude…

DOUBLE DUDE!

I don’t have to feel like a douche for buying these because, unlike the majority of hipsters who I assume will be rocking them, I’ve actually beaten that game several times and won’t be trying to smell my feet every time somebody points out the Bowser on my shoes.

The pairs above are slated to be released in August, but just today another two of the four limited edition MARIOCHUCKSISSES came available for preorder in the US (snatch ‘em up here if you can!).

As much as I’d love to order those right meow, I’m not based in the US… And also, the other sets are way cooler.

I’m frivilous, but not frivilous enough to get a pair of shoes I’m “meh” over just because they’ve got a sick box (Hehehe, STDs) and an invincibility star on the back.

SO GOOD.

I’d like to say I pimped my Facebook profile last in honour of these sneaks, but it was kind of a happy coincidence. I’ve been working on some new branding materials and I re-stumbled upon this photo from Paris yesterday and … well, the rest is l’histoire.

In other bits of blogworthiness, here are 29 ways to stay creative. This video (by TO-FU based on Paul Zi’s list is one of the best and most important things you’ll see today, I guarantee it:

Also awesome (and coincidentally quite relevant to a blog post I published two days ago) = An artist’s statement, translated into plain English:

Bwahahaha.

You know what’s not blogworthy? A lot of things. Maybe I’ll write more about this when I have the time and the freedom to snark out properly (emancipation imminent). Until then, my PR / Marketing friends can read this post by Casie and know that I feel exactly the same way. Zipping my mouth now because, unlike Casie, I don’t have the tact to keep things polite when it comes to this topic.

(I’m the dude.)

BYEBYE LOVE YOU GOTTA GO! Lifeliness awaits. Maybe I will see the new X-Men tonight with my boyfriend like a normal girl. I’d like that very much… in theory.
