The Restart Page: Playing with the ghosts of OS past…

Greetings!

Have you ever been like like “DUDE… I really wish I could find all of my old computers, pre-load them with every Operating System I’ve ever run and watch them all boot up tonight”?

I know. ME TOO!!!

Yes, yes. Lies.

I’ve never explicitly thought about doing this, but who would?

I do love The Restart Page all the same. This web-based vintage startup screen simulator allows you to relive those glorious moments of boredom and anxiety you used to experience while waiting for your computer to boot up after school because your mom turned it off while cleaning and GAHDDAMIT WHY DO YOU TAKE SO LONG TO BOOT APPLE MACINTOSH? THERE ARE BOYS WAITING FOR ME ON ICQ! JEEPERS MOMMMMMMM, GO AWAY I’M TRYING TO MACK AND I DON’T WANT ANY CUT UP APPLE SLICES RIGHT NOW!

In simple terms, not my terms, The Restart Page is “A walk down OS memory lane” — and it is strangely cathartic in spite of how impatient I remember feeling during a mandatory reboot back in the day (see above).

I suppose it’s much like my elementary school bus stop and the theme song from Living Single and the retainer I never wear that my parents still think I lost in Sweden.

I hated all of these things at one point, but when I come into contact with them now I find myself sighing “ahhhh, childhood”. Nostalgia. So powerful.

When that screen popped up, I could almost smell the hot plasticcy air coming out of our old Macintosh’s vents while I played Sim City 2000. Those were great times. I miss being 9.

Now, I’d like to take a moment to talk to you guys about a new fangled style of music called RAP…

Bwahahaha. No nostalgia there, just lulz. I don’t even think I could walk yet when this program was made. Good thing, too. My prolific rap skills and spaz-dancing would surely have made me quite popular amongst the other kids, and then where would I be today?

Not a blogger, that’s where not. Maybe I’d be a district attorney or an experimental psychiatrist or a stay-at-home mommy / professional TV watcher…
