Drum solo!
Sep 8th
We’d like to interrupt the cacophonous symphony of your busy day with a few iPhone photos of the blondebot enjoying Frikshun’s new toy:
Banging on an electronic drum-kit is a fabulous midnight activity. It sure does beat unpacking and syllabus writing and programming and grocery shopping and all of the things I should be doing.
But who’s to say what I should be doing anyways?
I’m bringing up my keyboard in a few weeks and we’re going to start a band called “Ikea CrimeSpree”.
Our first single will be “Reggae Man” and our singer is an orange cat.
Sweet.
Vuggin’ hipster drums, ehhh?
I start teaching an introductory online journalism course at a local college tomorrow after work. Isn’t that crazy?
If you said yes, we’re not friends anymore. It’s not crazy at all, jerk, because I’m an awesome teacher according to the freshmen I taught as a TA.
I like to think those Intro. to communication studies students appreciated the way I broke down complex cultural theories in an entertaining yet informative way… but according to evaluation comments, it was actually the Hannah Montana candy canes I brought to class that won them over.
Whatever.
This new class will have to settle for links to hilarious web videos because I can’t afford Miley Cyrus pops anymore (that branded Disney candy doesn’t come cheap, you know what I’m sayin’?)
It’s going to be another late night tonight… so much to do.
I have to go back to work right now, but I’d kind of like to bang on the drum all day…

TIFF 2010: Want to get in on the action?
Sep 7th
Brace Yourselves for the Hollywood Hurricane…
It’s approaching, my friends.
The most important 11-day-stretch of the year for star-watching celebustalkers in the great white north (and movie buffs too, apparently)
The 35th annual Toronto International Film Festival pops off this Thursday, and if the run-up coverage hasn’t already tipped you off, it’s going to be HUGE.
Hailed as the second-most important film festival in the world (next to Cannes), TIFF never fails to bring throngs upon throngs of real-live movie stars into town.
(And I’m not just talking about that dude from A Walk to Remember who lives downtown- I’m talking like, REAL HOLLYWOOD STARS.)
I’ll never live down the day that 15-year-old me yelled out “OMG! Johnny Depp! I LOVE YOU!!!!” across King St. one warm September evening… at Keanu Reeves. (#fail)
This year, I am actually living and working in Toronto, and lucky lucky lucky for me, I happen to be covering so many TIFF parties and events over the next two weeks that I can barely sleep out of sheer and utter EXCITEMENTO.
Will I meet Edward Norton or Megan Fox? Natalie Portman, Robert DeNiro? Will the gods prove themselves existent and align me a chance meeting with James Franco, perhaps? A girl can dream.
I’m pleased to announce that not only will I be covering some parties (and spreading juicy gossip) for work (you’ll know where to look for that if you know me IRL), I will also be working with vitaminwater canada to bring you exclusive TIFF party deets and celebrity interviews from their “Backyard” venue in Yorkville – right at the heart of the action.
I’ve seen the list of celebrities they’ll be hosting and… and let’s just say that if you were me when you saw that list, you would have peed your pants a little bit.
Not saying that… I did that… or anything…
You’ll be able to find my TIFF coverage on their blog and twitter stream (I’ll be tweeting as -l).
The backyard venue will be closed to the public for most of the festival, but this Friday the vitaminwater global team is opening up the patio doors and hosting a FREE public event to show off their sweet digs before the stars roll in: you are officially invited to the vitaminwater backyard social!
Check out the event’s description:
as hollywood descends on toronto for 11 days of supreme film entertainment, how would you like to be the first to hang out in the vitaminwater backyard? we’re giving you and your friends a rare glimpse into vitaminwater’s tiff headquarters at 36 hazelton where we will be celebrating featured films and hosting celebs. join us for food and drinks at our backyard social and launch tiff in style.
once you register, your name will be on our list, no tickets required. first come first serve, must be 19 years old and up to attend.
for more information about the event, check out the vitaminwater canada blog and follow the updates at @vitaminwater_ca. (the hashtag is #tiffby)
See you there?
Feel free to Tweet me (using the hashtag #tiffby) once you get there so that I can find you in the crowd for a high-five, aight?

The Fine Brothers: Spoiling novels, stealing hearts
Sep 7th
Crush of the day = these boys. Nerd is teh hot. You know this.
Regard: Four minutes. 50 book spoilers. One of the most educational lunch breaks you’ll ever have:
Symbolism people, SYMBOLISM.
Now I don’t even need to read those Twilight books everybody’s been raving about.
The next time I see a group of 15-year-old girls at the mall I’m going to run right up to them and scream “OMG WASN’T IT AWESOME WHEN EDWARD CUT THAT BABY OUT OF BELLA’S STOMACH?!”
And then we’ll gab and bond until security comes to take me away, at which point the terrified youngsters will breathe a sigh of relief and dial up their mommies to let them know that the crazy lady has been apprehended…
Ahhh daydreams.

Breakfast Bloggage: Dell’s party and the giggly little camel
Sep 3rd
Kix and keyboards, Wheaties and Wordpress, Corn pops and coding – Is there any finer a combination than cereal and computers?
If you look at my be-crumbed workspace , you will see that I think NOT.
Another fine combo? Tunes and Toys (in so many ways).
Music and technology go together like peanut butter and jelly. Like movies and popcorn. Like Lauren O’Neil and literary triptychs.
As I mentioned a few weeks ago, Dell brought Down with Webster on board to perform for fans at their sick “Ultimate End of Summer Party“.
Last night, it all went down without a hitch.
I was lucky enough to score a VIP pass to the party (Did I mention that I love Dell lately? ‘Cause I do.) but unfortunately, I got caught up at work in the busy city and couldn’t make it to St. Cats in time for the band’s performance.
Woe is me
I’m so woe.
Fortunately, my homegirl sent me some pics of all the contest winners rocking out so I didn’t feel completely disconnected.
I was bummed that I couldn’t be there, but I’ve got to admit that even just seeing pictures of the fans going wild made me smile.
There’s something so purely positive about fandom in general. Whether it’s sports, music, comedy, gadgets – whenever I see people getting fanatical I feel a little bit fanatical too.
Then again, I’m a bit of a fangirl by nature. My head explodes on the daily.
Last night I absolutely lost my marbles over this font and, I don’t know if you can really be a bona fide fan of laughing camels, but I’ve been LOLing over this all morning.
I may even compulsively scour the internet for advice on how to buy a camel in Canada today. Maybe.
Our love is like water, ticklish camel.
I’ve got to go blowdry my hair and get to work now. Tonight I’m getting it CHOPPED! (my hair, not my work.)
I still have no idea what I’m going to do with it. Hopefully the stylists at this trendy salon everybody’s been telling me to hit up will be able to help out with that.
I’m leaning towards a long bob, like the 2008 Nicole Richie cut I’ve been loving on for years:
But I also like the sort of messy platinum look Gwen’s been rocking lately, since it’s pretty much exactly what I have right now (complete with the long uneven bangs) except shorter.
What do y’all think?

The lunchtime blog: Catfish, Nerdspecs and 90210 day
Sep 2nd
Oh my Facebook, the website for Catfish (uber-buzzed about controversial about upcoming film du jour) has got to be one of the most clever film sites I’ve ever seen.
Go Enter Nev’s World. You’ll be happy you did.
For a minute there, I felt like I was working actually in the Mac OS. Ah, nostalgia. I miss that ol’ Blueberry iMac.
Watch!:
A co-worker just showed me the trailer for that film and I was about thisclose to running over to Chinatown in search of a bootlegged copy from Monday night’s Toronto screening (Apparently I momentarily forgot that I don’t like in 1995 New York city circa 1995) , but I went to the bathroom and took pictures of my new specs and orthopedic shoes instead because that’s what I do on my coffee breaks.
Some people indulge in cigarettes or banal small talk by the water cooler (assuming that your office has one). I indulge in shameless acts of self-obsession.
I’m not actually self-obsessed, but I can certainly see how it might appear that way.
Hey, give me a break – I grew up in the 80’s!
And speaking of times gone by, HAPPY 90210 DAY!!! 9.02.10 – get it? Please enjoy this awesome clip of the gang getting ready for the spring dance. Dress drama and Dylan McKay in a tux? You spoil me, interwebs…
One last point of interest:
I found out today that Mark Zuckerburg is worth $ 4 Billion.
Coincidentally, Burger King was slated to be sold today for close to that very amount.
Theoretically, this means that Zucks could enter the Whopper world if he really wanted to. So could Canada’s five biggest banks, but I don’t think they’re going to… (can you tell I was just working with Financial news?)
I wonder if he’d try for the King Pin spot in Fast Food land. Steal Wendy away from Ronald and RUN THIS COUNTRY (as if he already doesn’t).
I just blew my own mind.
Time to go grab a pop and get back to work.
JUST a pop. Yesterday, I went down to grab a pop and came back upstairs with a new friend for my desk.
The toy store at the base of this building is deadly huge. I’ll probably rack up quite a few creatures during my time here…

Fan Expo 2010: Nizzle nerds out [VIDEO]
Sep 1st
Hiya hooms.
Feel like watching a bunch of nerdlingers geek out over even bigger nerdlingers and related nerdcore merchandise?
I did. So I went to FanEX at the Metro Convention Centre on Sunday, despite the fact that I’d only slept a few hours and was living in a 90% un-packed house.
You know your girl isn’t going to pass up an opportunity to buy some kawaii new toys and Nintendo gear – or feel borderline stylish… even if only in comparison to obese Freddy Krueger.
Here’s the video. Enjeezy!

$435 Super Mario Sweater – Would you Rock it?
Aug 30th
There may be an extreme heat alert in place right for Toronto right now, but sweater weather is almost here.
I can feel it. Heck, I can SEE it:
That doggy’s all ready for the fall time with his fuzzy wool coat but are YOU, fleshbot?
I didn’t think so.
Hoomins (and sphynxies) need to cover up when it gets chilly outside.
This Super Mario Sweater will definitely keep you warm, and it’s undeniably sweet – but it’s also $435.For one sweater.
According to JoyStiq, for that price you could have two Nintendo Wiis, a Playstation 3, an Xbox 360, a top of the line netbook or a bunch of knives or something.
If I had an extra 450 bones to throw towards my wardrobe, I’d spend it on a new coat or boots or a shoulder vampire or something. Maybe a deluxe Evil Jester costume…
You know, something I could wear every day.
The irony is that anyone who would drop that much on one item of clothing probably isn’t a gamer to begin with and wouldn’t want to wear something to tragically nerdcore.
I am not one of said snobs. I want this sweater SO EFFING MUCH right now.
Hey Shigesato Itoi – my birthday is in November… wink wink, nudge nudge
Love,
THE JESTAH
